Waterford Youth Committee co-ordinates and develops youth services in the city in line with the Youth Work Act. The purpose of the Act is to provide a legal framework for the provision of youth work programmes and services in Waterford City . The Act sets out a definition of youth work “as a planned programme of education designed for the personal and social development of young people through their voluntary participation, and which is complementary to their formal, academic and vocational education and training and provided formally by voluntary youth work organisations”. It is the remit of Waterford Youth Committee to ensure that the provisions of the Youth Work Act are carried out in Waterford City within the framework of the City of Waterford VEC . It is required to prepare a Development Plan for youth work in Waterford City . The first step of the process will include an audit of current youth work provision.

Some of the tasks of the Committee include administering the Grant Scheme for Special Youth Projects and the Annual Youth Services Grants. Waterford Youth Committee will assist in the establishing of a new Voluntary Youth Council. Assist in the provision of Garda Vetting for clubs and groups and provide training in conjunction with the Waterford Voluntary Youth Council to volunteers and staff within the youth services. It also undertakes research and commissions surveys on youth related issues, supports Annual Youth Awards, Hasbro Bursary Awards and other initiatives.
